How Do I Know If Skills Coaching Is Right For Me?

My groups are ideal for you if you’ve already tried individual therapy but ultimately came away unsatisfied for one reason or another. Perhaps you found it hard to maintain the gains made from week to week; after each session, you felt inspired to pursue change, but as the week wore on and life got busy, the skills and insights you learned slipped off your radar.

Additionally, maybe too many sessions just focused on life updates instead of skill-building, leaving you unable to achieve your goals or maintain a clear sense of direction.

If this is the case, then I am confident that you will find my skills group fruitful, engaging, and transformational. Because it takes place in a group setting, the program 1) costs less than standard weekly one on ones, 2) allows you to stay on track with your goals more easily, and 3) focuses more on learning and less on individual processing or week-to-week updates.

What To Know About My Skills Group

Before joining my skills groups, I will hold two individual sessions with you so that I can give you some foundational knowledge about DBT and make sure you feel comfortable joining the group. The group meets once a week on Zoom for 90 minutes. It’s an open group, meaning people can join at any time after they’ve completed the initial two sessions with me.

There are four different modules in my skills groups: mindfulness, emotion regulation, distress tolerance, and interpersonal effectiveness. We’ll move through them in a sequential, rotating manner so that you are able to complete the modules no matter when you start.

All in all, the group program is about 28 weeks long and each module takes about four to seven weeks. Below is a rundown of the modules and what we’ll cover in each one:

Mindfulness (4 weeks long)

  • You will learn to pay attention to the present moment on purpose AND without judgment, allowing yourself to practice being instead of always doing. I will help you understand that being distracted is normal and not something to criticize yourself for—mindfulness is simply the practice of noticing when you are “elsewhere” and bringing your attention back to the present moment.

Interpersonal Effectiveness (7 weeks long)

  • Knowing how to communicate so that others really “hear” what you are saying is a valuable skill. I will teach you to communicate in a way that gets your needs met while allowing you to maintain self-respect. This way, you’ll be better equipped to handle conflict and feel more confident establishing boundaries with other people.

Distress Tolerance (7 weeks long)

  • The goal of this module is to help you survive crises without making things worse. Instead of resorting to maladaptive coping mechanisms to deal with emotional pain (substances, risky behaviors, etc.), you will learn to get through moments of emotional pain using skills that promote relaxation and mindful self-awareness.

Emotion Regulation (7 weeks long)

  • I will teach you practical skills for identifying, naming, and regulating your emotions. You will learn to notice difficult emotions when they first surface and then decide if you need to work through them or not.

The beauty of taking all these modules one after the other is that the skills from one module can translate easily into the next. For instance, being able to effectively regulate your emotions makes it easier to stay calm in crisis situations, which increases your mindfulness and allows you to communicate more clearly and effectively. So no matter when you sign up, you will walk away with real-life skills for navigating a wide variety of challenges.

Experience The Life-Changing Power Of My Skills Group

In the past, I’ve led skills groups with retired NFL players, survivors of religious trauma, and people suffering from substance abuse disorders and various mental health diagnoses. Many of my clients have chosen to stay in my groups for multiple years in order to continue practicing and honing the skills they gain. My experience working with adults in many different settings and my knowledge of DBT enables me to make these skills accessible to all.

If you want to learn valuable skills for tolerating difficult emotions, improving your relationships, and approaching life in a more mindful and grounded way, I encourage you to pursue DBT skills coaching with me.
